Modeling of Micro and Nano-scale Problems
Most of the engineering problems can be cracked experimentally. We can attain solutions to the problems through carefully designed experiments. In some circumstances, however, due to difficulties in experiments or sometime short of resources, computational modeling and simulation become an important role in capturing the fine mechanical and structural behaviors and revealing the delicate material properties of many engineering problems. This talk will mainly share some of my selected recent works, both experimentally and computationally, in modeling of micro and nano-scale problems.
Professor Liew is the Head of Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering and Chair Professor of Civil Engineering, City University of Hong Kong. Prior to this, Professor Liew was appointed Chair Professor of Building and Construction, City University of Hong Kong, a tenured full Professor at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and the Founding Director of Nanyang Center for Supercomputing and Visualization. He was Visiting Professors of Tsinghua University, MIT, Texas A&M University, University of Southern California, University of Toronto and Kyoto University. His research interests encompass computational and experimental mechanics, materials modeling, multiscale modeling, nanomechanics and fire simulation. Over his academic career, he has published over 700 SCI journal articles. Professor Liew is listed by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) as a Highly Cited Researcher in engineering. His publications have been cited over 26,000 times and his current h-index is 66 (ISI) or 81 (Google Scholar). To date, Professor Liew has attracted over US$40 million research and development funds from government funding agencies, industries and higher learning institutions. He has graduated over 50 PhD students and supervised over 70 Post-doctoral fellows. His students are well received by industries and many of them have become faculty members of universities worldwide.
